Causes of Neck Pain

Our neck, also called the cervical spine, begins at the base of the skull and contains seven small vertebrae. Incredibly, the cervical spine supports the full weight of your head, which is on average about 12 pounds.

While the cervical spine can move your head in nearly every direction, this flexibility makes the neck very susceptible to pain and injury.

A few causes of neck pain are injury and accidents, growing older, osteoarthritis, degenerative disc disease, and daily life in general. Postural stress (poor posture) can contribute to chronic neck pain with symptoms extending to the upper back and the arms. Call Heartland Family Chiropractic to schedule your appointment.

Injury or Accidents

Every trauma has the potential to upset and damage your body's structural balance by causing misalignment (subluxations). Too often, severe health problems can begin as a little fall, bump, or whiplash that caused a subluxation.

Many times chiropractic patients have discovered that the cause of their present complaints was a childhood fall or even birth trauma. There may have been no broken bones or serious bleeding but there was damage that was never corrected.

Millions of people leave emergency rooms unaware that they are carrying around hidden distortions that can cause severe health problems at a later date. Accident victims often continue to suffer from pain, weakness, and disability for months, years, or decades after the trauma.

Even after the best medical care, they may continue to take painkillers or muscle relaxants, use various therapies, or have repeated surgeries.

Whiplash

Whiplash and neck injury sufferers may complain of headaches, vision problems, dizziness, ringing in the ears, decreased attention span, and learning and memory impairments. Chiropractic care realigns the vertebrae and removes stress from nerves.

As one major medical journal reports: "Whiplash injuries are common. Chiropractic care is the only proven effective treatment in chronic cases". (Journal of Orthopedic Medicine; 1999;21(1))
